England are hosting West Indies in the first Test of the three-match series at The Rose Bowl in Southampton, which started from July 9, Wednesday.

After a gruelling day of cricket, I can still say that West Indies have ended Day three of this Test match with their noses ahead of England. They added 261 runs overnight with the help of Shane Dowrich and Roston Chase, who made the likes of James Anderson, Mark Wood, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer to bend their backs. The grit was quite unbelievable to be honest, because I have not seen something of this sort from this West Indies side in a really long time. West Indies were bundled out for 318 runs, with Stokes claiming a four-fer and Anderson a three-fer. A lead of 114 runs over England on their soil is worthy of applause as the hosts have plenty to worry about as they are still 99 runs behind. The action of Day 4 is going to be enthralling and I am quite certain West Indies have a lot more in them as they don’t seem to be lacking a punch. As for England, they will have to stay at the crease for long so that they can go for a draw at least and not throw the game away with two days to play in this first Test match of the series. Dom Sibley is out there in the middle, unbeaten, alongside Rory Burns and this pair has somehow managed to hold on to their resilience in the last 10 overs of Day 3. Sibley got out for a duck in the first innings of this game courtesy a peach of a delivery from Shannon Gabriel which took the stumps for a cartwheel. But this time around he needs to hang in there as England needs him; in fact the statistics suggest the same. Sibley averages 36.70 in Test with 367 runs under his belt and he has got just one hundred to his name in seven matches. Believe it or not, he averages 97.00 in the third match innings! Yes he does, I am not even kidding. In the ICC World Test Championship, the right-hander averages 47.00 and that is more than we are expecting from him right now. Bet 365 is offering odds of 1.90 for Sibley to score at least 30 runs and that could well be the case as he has not thrown his wicket away in the first 10 overs of the innings.

Rory Burns was decent in the first innings for England but unfortunately he fell prey to yet another beautiful delivery from Gabriel and was dismissed for a gritty knock of 30 runs. He has handled the menacing West Indies bowling lineup well so far and he is expected to do a lot better in the second innings. Burns averaged 33.96 overall and he has 1016 runs under his belt in 16 matches with two centuries and six half tons. He has played seven matches on his home turf and has scored 442 runs at an average of 34.00 including one hundred and two fifties. Burns averages 43.80 in the first match of any Test series and has 438 runs to his name with one ton and three fifties. In the ICC World Test Championship, he has scored 523 runs at an average of 40.23 with one century and three half tons. Bet 365 is offering generous odds of 1.53 for Burns to score at least 31 runs and I cannot give any more assurance beyond these statistics. Going by the looks of the Test match and the threat of this West Indies bowling lineup, I am afraid he might score at least 30 runs, but Sibley is going to head to the pavilion before Burns does! Sibley’s average in any first match of a Test series is as low as 16.75 and that is something that has hurt England. Sibley has never played a series against West Indies and this is a totally new attack, who already knows his weak point; that is how they got them out in the first innings. Sibley also has not played a single Test match on the English soil and he has got big shoes to fill. Last year (2019), Sibley featured in three Test matches for England, and has managed to score only 71 runs at a poor average of 14.70.
